Last Night at Chateau Marmont Lauren Weisberger 9780007311002 Books

Weisberger has proved herself a true one-hit wonder with Devil Wears Prada. Everything she’s done since (except Everyone Worth Knowing which was simply okay) has been abjectly horrible. This book is no exception. The plot should have been interesting, but she managed to mangle it. For me, Weisberger’s work has become dull and uninspired with unnecessary exposition and a total lack of transitions. Andy from DWP may have been whiny and unlikeable at times but she was relatable unlike the insipid, one-dimensional characters Weisberger has trotted our since. Skip this and everything else. I’m starting to think DWP was ghostwritten

Oh yeah, and as someone predicted 7 years ago, this has aged horribly.

Last Night at Chateau Marmont Lauren Weisberger 9780007311002 Books Reviews

As a reader of all of Lauren Weisberger's previous novels, I feel I have a pretty good gauge on what she is capable of as an author. I was surprised to see the negative energy surrounding this book, especially considering I rather enjoyed it. It is, however, very different from her previous light hearted novels, focusing on the struggling relationship of a nutritionist and her suddenly famous over night husband. Although this is not my favorite from Lauren, I still feel this novel is worth a read. It captures a more mature and different side of love that most novels do not, and I think we can all appreciate something a little more realistic.
The idea behind the story (my husband becomes a famous rock star) was brilliant, but the execution was awful. The characters are really unlikeable and "Rook" and Julian weren't characters I would wish a happy ending to. They were both portrayed as these pathetic and weak people that won't stand up for themselves. The story dragged on and on and I was waiting (in vain) for something exciting to happen. The only time the story caught my interest was when the hotel scene happened, and then (like the rest of the book) it just faded into nothingness... Come on Lauren - i expected way more from you!!
Lauren Weisberger has a distinctive writing style. She delves beyond the surface of relationships...but her characters always seem too rash in my opinion and Brooke and Julian were no different. It was very much "The Devil Wears Prada" but with a different industry and the focus on the couple. I enjoyed reading it and it was a good BTS look at the music industry and the paparrazzi-laden world we live in.
There is a good reason the last chapter is titled "The Pity Dance." Oh, the misery of being married to a sweet, goodlooking guy with tons of money who also happens to make it to the big time to become a rock star. Brooke Alter is one of the most unlikable characters I've read about lately. Most of the book is spent on her misery, complaints, suspicions, feeling other people's pity towards her(see above chapter title) and her pain. I enjoyed the start-up, but after getting furthur into the book I began to wonder if anything would make her happy. Then I realized- no, nothing short of getting her own way. And what do you know. She did. Poor Julian. He never had a chance.
This was dopey. Seriously the story line would have been fine if the characters weren't so pathetic. Was more hopeful that the writing would have been better. This is no Devil Wears Prada so don't expect it to be on par.
What happened to the Lauren Weisberger who wrote "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Everyone Worth Knowing"? I picked "Last NIght at Chateau Marmont" because of how thoroughly I enjoyed those other 2 Lauren Weisberger books. The characters in those were well-drawn, distinct, and memorable. In contract, Weisberger seems to have "phoned it in" on this book. Boring characters, lackluster plot, nothing in the writing that distinguishes it as having been written by someone of her abilities. Hoping for better from her in the future.
Brooke has spent the last several years of her life supporting her musician husband as he's worked his way towards a recording contract. Now he has one, and it looks like he's about to rocket towards stardom.

But possible rock star status and a potential new life changes things, and Brooke starts to doubt what is going on. Is her husband as loyal as she thinks? Can she handle being the wife of a red-hot musician, knowing that fans will be throwing themselves at her husband? Will her own daily life stay the same - and will it be enough, or will she be expected to change that, too?

"Last Night" is about the bumpy road to sudden success after a career of struggling, and how things can evolve into something new without losing sight of the past. I really enjoyed this read.
