Things as they are; mission work in southern India Amy Carmichael 9781177691284 Books

Ms Charmichael writes an honest, 'not for the faint at heart' review of Christian mission work as it really looks. This book also benefits in showing the sociological and cultic (religious) aspects of Hinduism. The study of India without an in-depth study of Hinduism is pointless. Take particular note of the section on castes, child brides and children being married to the gods.

Things as they are; mission work in southern India Amy Carmichael 9781177691284 Books Reviews

The book started off slow and depressing. I doubted whether or not I'd like it, but it was amazing! The shocking honesty with which this story was told made my desire for God's will in India even greater. Every Christian should read this book!
I'm a missionary in South America, and I loved reading this book! It's so RAW. If you wonder what missions is like, this bok will let you know all the gritty and unglamorous things about it. And if you're experienced in missions, you'll find yourself feeling very free of the stereotypes surrounding missions and shaking your head agreeing with Carmicheal!
A MUST read for anyone attached to mission work. It is so comforting to read Amy while living through difficult days. She seems to understand like no one else.
This is a well written and detailed account of missionary life in India. Many years have passed, but things remain much the same. I highly recommend this book.
I never met a book by Amy Carmichael I didn't like. Her straight forward direct look at the Christian life holds true to the word of God without wavering. In this book she looks at life in Southern India nearly 100 years ago when she first was ministering the gospel there. While things may have changed in today's India, the principles of sharing the gospel with a lost people remain true without respect to time or culture. It is an unveiled look at the challenges we face in sharing the gospel, both our internal struggles and then the external struggles. But she doesn't leave us struggling. She demonstrates in word and deed how to overcome the struggles and continue to go forth bearing precious seed, sowing for a harvest of souls in the kingdom of God.
This book was a real challenge. It was heart-breaking to read of the strong opposition to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was sad reading, but good information because it was a first-hand account of the true conditions when Amy Carmichael was in India, and it included quotations from many other missionaries. The book was interesting, and it challenged me to be more faithful in my witnessing.
This is one of the most encouraging and challenging books I have read in a long time. Amy talks about mission work where she is - where it's not flourishing. If you are a person who is trying to share the Gospel with people who won't listen, and are feeling discouraged, I hope that this will encourage you as it encouraged me. I would especially recommend this book for people who are in ministry, where at times it feels like nothing is happening, and you are wondering if you're really where you are supposed to be.

Some of the main topics are faithfulness over success, the importance of prayer, and how missions and the Great Commission are not optional.

This book is not encouraging because it is about success. It is encouraging because it is about the struggle.
