A Thousand Pardons: A NovelThe disintegration of a family and the start of each of their new lives after that disintegration. The novel opens with a family that is not happy but is at least living a family life. It's one of two parents who've grown apart and an adopted child who until the marriage itself dissolves, never questions her own Chinese heritage. My problems with the novel is how unlikeable so many of the main characters are. The three members of the family? The wife who decided to stop working once she was married? The husband who looks at what life is and blinks? The daughter who gives so much sass to her mother that I'm surprised that at no point physical violence or abandonment was not a serious consideration? The movie star who weeps that he has it all and its just too much?
There is the theme of forgiveness, of owning up to your mistakes, is an interesting one to explore, but in reality, companies can only do this so often. If a company does X and asks for forgiveness and strives mightily to avoid doing any such thing in the future, society as a whole can advance. On the other hand, you can only apologize for dumping toxic sludge into the sewers so often before your image is tarnished beyond all redemption.
A Thousand Pardons ends on an open note so it's possible that these characters will emerge stronger than before as they've grown and changed but it's also possible they will continue to be strangers to one another and the greater world around them.

I knew I would finish this book from the first paragraph in. The writing was rich with detail and played like a movie in my head as I read along. There was something likable about each main character except for Hilton Barth. I wasn't pleased with the ending though it left The main character on the precipice of maybe gaining and losing it all at the same time with no closure.
Ben stumbles across this realization first, and in his struggle to find another direction, upends his whole family. His wife Helen and his daughter Sarah are blasted free of their lives. And somewhere over the horizon, super star Hamilton is struggling with ties of his own.
I found this book to be entertaining. The plot is a bit stale, although the addition of Hamilton mixes it up a bit. I didn't really like the characters much. Of them all, my favorite would have to be Sarah who takes her new life as an opportunity to shake free of the conceptions around her and to experiment with her own perceptions. I really liked many of her decisions, and it is her story that earns the fourth star for me. I also found nuggets of insight throughout the book and did stop to think several times on the subject of zero sum days. The prose flows well, and for a winter day, serves well.
I'm not sure what I expected, but this book was something different than that! It is a good story, well told, with strong and believable characters.
The basic theme is confession. You do wrong...you confess. Don't give excuses, just own up to what you did.
Ben is a lawyer and has grown bored with his life and his wife Helen. He becomes enamored with an intern in his law firm and is so fixated that the other partners notice and warn him. It is not enough. Before long - though he is not technically unfaithful to his wife (TECHNICALLY), he is disgraced and while drinking drunk, crashes his car. A passing cyclist stops to help, calls the police and takes a photo of the crash with his cell phone.
Ben cannot deny what has happened and his career, marriage and family crash around him. He does not deny anything.
Facing a divorce, Helen looks for a job and is hired by a PR firm where she makes a name for herself with their small time clients by advising them to simply confess.
Before long, the company ends up being absorbed by a larger PR firm and Helen's expertise is put to the test.
There is a back story of a famous actor whom Helen knew in grammar school, but I don't think that is really strong or essential to the story.
This novel will make you think...about things you have done and things you left undone. I enjoyed it and recommend it.
