I bought this a long time ago to go along with the then reasonably priced Krauss Ring. Though I use the subtitles when watching on DVD, this translation works so much better than the librettos that sometimes come with CD's. I understand it was made to be sung and it reads that way when listening to the cycle.

It's important to note that I own a first edition paperback which has no Georg Solti introduction but contains both German and English side by side for easy translation.
This is a great volume for any Ring lover. The translations are solid and easy to use with the German original since the phonetic cadences match. Even when listening to the Goodall Ring (which uses the Porter translation) this book keeps me up to speed in situations where the English is difficult to follow.

I also like the typeface and translation of stage directions and settings, as well.
Every ring nut needs this libretto after a while and this is the best one out there. First learn the Ring with a DVD with sub-titles. Next you will prefer a CD as the sets usually distract from the music, and that is when you need this libretto. Wagner is the best music ever written and this libretto only helps the true ring nuts. But never, ever try to turn someone on to Wagner. Keep the club small and tell no one.
Ever since I listened to the ENO production of the Ring Cycle under Reginald Goodall's direction many years ago I have longed to see the translation by Andrew Porter. So I jumped at the chance of getting it.So mission accomplished !.
We've bought this book as a volume with Rackham illustrations for the Ring of the Nibelung (my wife is a book illustrator and she's highly interested in good quality of well-known illustrators' editions).

Upon receipt we have found out that the quality of illustrations is as awful as possible. Actually, we didn't even know that it's possible to produce such a terrible edition today. It's a pity we've spent so much money (including delivery to Russia - about $8 per item) for this book. Try to find something better, this is not the one you need. Definitely.
I bought this book with the intent of getting a Ring libretto that doesn't require a magnifier to read.

But when I received this item, it turned out to be only English. I have no qualms about the translation; my beef is the lack of the original German since my recordings are in German.

I've discarded this book, and have since ordered the individual librettos from Schirmer. These books show the original German in parallel with the English, which is what a true libretto is supposed to look like.
This translation is a work of art in its own right. It was written with the specific purpose of being sung and those who listen to the Goodall recording of The Ring will hear it in its intended context. It does a superb job. Bernard Levin wrote a wonderful column in The Times singing its praises. Do we need a book? Owners of the Goodall recording hear it wonderfully articulated, as well as having a hard copy version with the CDs. Owners of German recording will get an English translation, unconstrained by Porter's need to match the words with the musical modulations. All I can say is - try listening to a German recording with this translation in your hands. It adds a whole new dimension to the understanding.
