Thornbrook Park is a lovely book. It tells the story of Captain Marcus Thorne, the second son of an aristocratic family who is home from the Boer War and dealing with the emotional aftermath it has left with him. It also tells the story of Mrs. Eve Kendal who is now a widow returning to England from India after the death of her young husband to the challenges of the tropics. Marcus and Eve meet at his brother, the Earl's country estate. They are attracted to one another, but Eve is uncertain if she can be the wife that Marcus needs. The Earl and his wife are hoping to convince Marcus to marry, Alice, the sister of the Countess; much to the chagrin of Marcus. It's an interesting plot with other aspects of intrigue also being part of the story. I have given this novel four stars, because I think that the writing isn't as sophisticated as some other works in the genre I've read; and, yet, I'm glad to have read this story. I know there are two others that follow: Lady Alice is the main character of the second book, and the Earl and Countess in the third book. I know I will read them too.

As advertised this novel is set in the same era as Downton Abby. Lovely story of love, disappointments, endearing relationships among the titled in England. Was an excellent read.
I really enjoyed this story about Marcus and Eve. They both had a bit of a rough time in life and were ready for some happiness. I really like the time period when this story takes place. Keep these stories coming because I certainly will read them.
Loved this book, very well written, very intriguing. I loved the hero and heroine. I have never read an early twentieth century novel since I'm more familiar with nineteenth century. It was interesting getting used to trains and cars in a historical setting. However, having lived in the North of England, I have a hard time believing how often they traveled from Yorkshire to London. In twenty three years, I rarely traveled to London, perhaps once or twice. The trains were steam engines and not as fast as subway trains. Other than the quick trips to London, everything else was believable and I enjoyed the story very much.
Lush, emotional, charming, witty, sensual--I easily use all these terms to describe Sherri Browning's historical romance THORNBROOK PARK. The forbidden affair between Marcus and Eve is deliciously sensual and sigh worthy. A war-hardened captain returned to his family estate, Marcus refuses to submit to the will of his brother, the earl. A widow back from India, Eve is determined to make her way on her own, but finds her husband's funds missing. Beyond that, no spoilers from me. Set in the turn of the century, the story captures the atmosphere and mores of the times, showing the advent of automobiles and changes in women's opportunities and fashions. Wonderful dialogue, especially the author's employ of literature to make points about the characters' situations. Shakespeare and the Brontes and Kipling, oh my. A delightful novel with a classic set-up but creative plot twists and romantic set-backs abound. I immediately downloaded the second in the series, AN AFFAIR DOWNSTAIRS.
